This diverse country has two primary languages: Ewe and French. However, English is widely spoken in shops and market places. The nation’s religious beliefs are as varied as its people. 24.3% hold various indigenous beliefs, 50.6% are Christian, and 24% are Muslim.

The Togo Assemblies of God continues to experience rapid growth due to an aggressive church planting vision. Currently there are about 800 churches and 400 pastors. There is a strong diploma Bible school at Sada. In addition, Togo hosts the West Africa School of Theology (WAAST) that trains on the BTh and MA levels. A 10,000 square foot library is now being built on the WAAST campus, to be completed in November 2005. A 48-bed two-story dormitory is to be completed in November 2006.

Health

There is a high incidence of malaria in Togo. Students coming from non-malarial areas should consider taking preventative malaria medication during their stay in Togo. Students are encouraged to contact their physician for recommended anti-malaria medications.

Travel

Everyone except nationals of the member countries of ECOWAS must have a visa to visit Togo. Proof of yellow-fever vaccination is required for entry at the airport, though it is not usually checked at land crossings.

The Togo A/G and WAAST will help students procure visas. The cost for a visa is estimated to be around $50.00.

Togo's international airport, Tokoin Airport, is 6km (4mi) north-east of central Lomé. Airport transportation can be arranged for a fee. If you're planning on flying into Togo, check also the fares to Accra (Ghana) and Cotonou (Benin), as they can often be cheaper. Both Accra (Ghana) and Cotonou (Benin) are about three hours by car from Lomé on asphalt roads. Transport from either Accra or Cotonou can also be arranged for a fee. Lodging can also be arranged in either city in case an overnight stay is required.
